What is it?
The Patellar tendon connects the quadriceps muscles to the lower leg bone (tibia). It is partially responsible for straightening the knee. Patellar Tendonitis is a condition where the Patellar Tendon in the knee becomes inflamed and irritated. It is usually accompanied by pain or swelling felt in the front of the knee.

Patellar Tendonitis is often caused by continued stress on the tendon due to weakness in the quadriceps muscles, imbalances in quadriceps and hamstring strength, improper mechanics in athletic competition or exercise, a rapid change in the intensity or type of exercise, or sudden change in training surface. Individuals who participate in basketball, volleyball, soccer, and other running sports are particularly vulnerable to patellar tendonitis.

What are the symptoms?
The major symptoms of patellar tendonitis are pain below the kneecap, tightness, and swelling in the knee. This is not a devastating injury, however it can make daily activities such as running, jumping, and kneeling difficult and painful. Left untreated, patellar tendonitis may worsen, resulting in the formation of scar tissue within the knee joint or in the most extreme of circumstances, rupture of the patellar tendon.

How is Patellar Tendonitis treated?
Your Doctor or Physical Therapist will likely advise you to avoid any activity that aggravates symptoms. Physical therapy may be recommended as a treatment for patellar tendonitis. Your therapist can employ such methods as manual therapy, ultrasound, ice, stretching, and therapeutic exercise.

Can it be prevented?
Yes. Following these simple rules can help prevent Patellar Tendonitis:

  • Perform a proper warm-up when exercising
  • Daily stretching of the quadriceps and hamstring muscle group
  • Strengthen quadriceps and hamstring muscles
  • Avoid or modify activities that aggravate symptoms
  • Use proper footwear
